Learn How to Add Boarding Passes to Apple Wallet
Understanding Apple Wallet and Digital Boarding Passes
Apple Wallet is an app built into iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches that stores digital versions of cards and passes. Instead of carrying physical boarding passes printed on paper, you can add them directly to your phone. This feature works with major airlines including American Airlines, United, Delta, Southwest, and many international carriers. As of 2024, over 500 airlines worldwide support digital boarding passes through Apple Wallet.

A boarding pass in Apple Wallet contains the same information as a printed version: your name, confirmation number, flight number, departure and arrival cities, seat assignment, and barcode. The barcode is what airport staff scan at security checkpoints and at the gate. Having your boarding pass on your phone means you don't need to worry about losing a paper copy or forgetting it at home.
The process of adding a boarding pass to Apple Wallet typically happens automatically when you book a flight with certain airlines. Some airlines send you an email with a link that adds your pass automatically. Others require you to manually add it through the airline's app or website. The method depends on which airline you're flying with and how you booked your ticket.
One key benefit is that your boarding pass updates in real time. If your flight gets delayed, your pass reflects that change. If your gate changes, the information updates automatically. You don't have to refresh anything or check your email for updates—Apple Wallet handles this behind the scenes.
Practical Takeaway: Before your next flight, check whether your airline supports Apple Wallet passes. You can find this information on the airline's website or by searching "[airline name] Apple Wallet" in your web browser. Not all airlines offer this feature yet, but the number supporting it grows regularly.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Adding a Boarding Pass
The specific steps for adding a boarding pass to Apple Wallet vary depending on how you booked your flight. If you booked directly through an airline that supports Apple Wallet, the process is usually automatic. You'll receive an email confirmation that includes a button or link saying "Add to Apple Wallet" or similar wording. Clicking this link opens Apple Wallet on your iPhone and displays the boarding pass ready to add.

To add the pass when you receive that link, follow these steps: Open the email on your iPhone, locate the "Add to Apple Wallet" button, and tap it. Apple Wallet opens automatically, and you see a preview of your boarding pass. Review the information to confirm it's correct—check your name, flight number, and date. Then tap the "Add" button in the top right corner of the screen. Your pass now appears in Apple Wallet under the Wallet tab.
If your airline doesn't send an automatic link, you may need to add the pass manually through the airline's app. Download the airline's official app from the App Store, log in with your confirmation number or booking reference, and find your flight. Look for an option that says "Add to Wallet," "Add to Apple Wallet," or similar language. Tap it, and the same process follows—you'll review your pass and confirm the addition.
Some airlines allow you to add a boarding pass through their website as well. Visit the airline's website, navigate to "Manage My Booking" or a similar section, enter your confirmation number, and look for the Apple Wallet option. Not all airlines offer this method, but major carriers typically do.
If you booked through a third-party travel website like Expedia, Kayak, or Google Flights, you may not see an automatic Apple Wallet option. In this case, contact the airline directly or check your airline app. The airline should have your reservation in their system and allow you to add the pass from their app or website.
Practical Takeaway: When you receive your flight confirmation email, save it or forward it to yourself. Some airlines send the Apple Wallet link in the original confirmation email, while others send it in a separate email closer to your departure date. Having the original email makes it easier to find the pass when you need it.
Accessing Your Boarding Pass When You Need It
Once your boarding pass is in Apple Wallet, retrieving it at the airport is straightforward. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone by tapping the Wallet icon on your home screen. Your passes appear in a list, organized by category. Boarding passes typically show at the top, ordered by date—your upcoming flights appear first. Tap on the boarding pass for your flight, and it expands to full size, ready to scan.

At security checkpoints, you can hold your iPhone up to the scanner without unlocking your phone. This is a built-in feature of Apple Wallet for airport security. The TSA and airport security staff scan the barcode on your screen, just as they would scan a printed pass. The process takes only a few seconds. You don't need to open any apps or navigate anywhere—simply present your phone with the pass showing.
When you reach the gate, the gate agent will scan your boarding pass again. The same process applies: hold your phone up to their scanner. Some gates have automated scanning machines where you place your phone against a reader. Others have handheld scanners that the gate agent uses. Either way, your phone's screen displays the barcode clearly and scans successfully.
If your flight information changes—your gate, time, or seat assignment—Apple Wallet updates automatically. You'll typically receive a notification on your phone when changes occur. Open the Wallet app, and your pass reflects the updated information. You don't need to do anything; the airline's system communicates directly with Apple Wallet.
In rare cases, an airport scanner might have trouble reading your phone's screen. This can happen if the screen is too dim, covered by a screen protector, or if the scanner is malfunctioning. Have your airline app available as backup, or ask airport staff if they can look up your reservation using your confirmation number. Most airports have systems to search for passengers by name and confirmation number if needed.
Practical Takeaway: The night before your flight, open Apple Wallet and verify your boarding pass is there and shows correct information. Knowing your boarding pass is already on your phone removes stress on the day of travel. Make sure your iPhone battery has enough charge—having a low battery indicator might cause concern at security, though your phone will still work.
Troubleshooting Common Issues With Digital Boarding Passes
Sometimes a boarding pass doesn't appear in Apple Wallet as expected. This usually happens when an airline hasn't yet added your reservation to their system. Most airlines update their systems within 24 hours of booking, but some take longer. If your pass doesn't appear within a day of booking, contact the airline's customer service. Provide your confirmation number, and they can help you add it manually or resend the Apple Wallet link.

Another common issue is that the pass appears but shows outdated information. If your flight was rescheduled or your seat changed, the pass should update automatically within a few minutes. If it doesn't update after 10 minutes, try closing Apple Wallet completely and opening it again. This refresh usually causes the new information to appear. If the pass still shows old information an hour before your flight, contact the airline to confirm the details are correct in their system.
Some people experience issues where Apple Wallet won't open the boarding pass at the airport. This can happen if your iPhone doesn't have cellular service and the boarding pass information wasn't fully downloaded. To prevent this, open your boarding pass at home or on a WiFi network before traveling. This ensures the information is stored on your phone even if you don't have service at the airport.
If you booked a flight but haven't received an email with an Apple Wallet link, check your email spam folder first. Airline emails sometimes get filtered incorrectly. If you find nothing there, log into the airline's website or app and look for an option to add the pass manually. You can usually find this by clicking on your reservation or booking details.
In cases where you have multiple boarding passes for connecting flights, each appears separately in Apple Wallet. You can swipe between them or tap the one you need. When you check in for your second flight, your connection's boarding pass updates just like your first one did.
Practical Takeaway: Screenshot your boarding pass on your iPhone as backup. While you should primarily use Apple Wallet, having a screenshot stored in your Photos app provides insurance if technology fails. The screenshot shows your barcode and all necessary flight details.
