Learn About YouTube Family Plan Costs and Features
Understanding YouTube Premium Family Plan Basics
YouTube Premium Family Plan is a subscription service that allows multiple people in the same household to enjoy YouTube Premium features on their own accounts. The family plan differs from individual Premium subscriptions by offering access to several accounts under one payment. As of 2024, the YouTube Premium Family Plan costs $22.99 per month in the United States, though pricing varies by country and region.

The family plan can include up to six family members, each with their own YouTube account. Each member gets their own personalized experience, including separate watch histories, recommendations, and saved playlists. This means that one person's viewing habits won't affect another family member's recommendations or suggestions. The service works across multiple devices and platforms, including smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart televisions.
YouTube Premium Family Plan includes the same core features as an individual Premium subscription but extends them across multiple accounts. These core features include ad-free viewing on YouTube, the ability to watch videos in the background while using other apps, offline downloading of videos for later viewing, and access to YouTube Music Premium as part of the subscription. Additionally, family members receive YouTube Music ad-free listening and the ability to create custom playlists and stations.
The family plan is managed through a family group, which is a Google feature that connects family members' Google accounts. One adult in the household sets up the family group and acts as the family manager, responsible for managing the subscription and family members. Other family members can join the group, and they don't need to be related by blood—they simply need to live at the same address and have Google accounts.
Practical takeaway: Understanding the basic structure of YouTube Premium Family Plan helps determine whether it suits your household's needs. If multiple people in your home watch YouTube, the family plan typically offers better value than purchasing individual subscriptions, since six individual Premium subscriptions would cost approximately $137.94 monthly compared to the family plan's $22.99.
Comparing Family Plan Costs to Individual Subscriptions
When evaluating YouTube Premium Family Plan costs, it's important to compare them against other subscription options. An individual YouTube Premium subscription costs $13.99 per month as of 2024 in the United States. For a household with two people, the individual route would cost $27.98 monthly, making the family plan at $22.99 a savings of approximately $4.99 per month or about $60 annually. With three household members, the savings become more substantial at roughly $19.97 monthly or $240 yearly.

YouTube also offers a student subscription option at $6.99 per month for verified students, which provides the same Premium features as a regular subscription. However, student subscriptions are individual accounts and cannot be combined into a family plan. A household with one student and two non-students would need to weigh the cost of one student subscription plus a family plan against other configurations.
Another consideration is YouTube Premium's bundling with other services. YouTube Premium includes access to YouTube Music Premium, which separately costs $10.99 per month as an individual subscription or $17.99 per month for a music family plan. Therefore, YouTube Premium Family Plan at $22.99 monthly includes both YouTube and YouTube Music for six people, combining two major services into one subscription.
Different regions have different pricing structures. In Canada, YouTube Premium Family Plan costs approximately $23.99 CAD monthly. In the United Kingdom, it's £17.99 monthly. In Australia, it's $24.99 AUD monthly. Some countries offer lower pricing tiers than the United States. Mexico, for example, has YouTube Premium Family Plan available at lower monthly rates, reflecting regional economic differences. Users should check their country's specific pricing when considering this subscription.
Additional costs to consider include any promotional pricing or discounts. YouTube occasionally offers discounts for new subscribers or bundled promotions with other Google services. Some mobile carriers include YouTube Premium or YouTube Music as part of their phone plans, which may reduce the need for a separate subscription. However, these promotions typically vary by carrier and region, so checking directly with your provider is necessary.
Practical takeaway: Calculate your household's potential savings by multiplying the number of people who currently use YouTube by $13.99 and comparing that total to the family plan's $22.99 monthly cost. Generally, if three or more household members use YouTube regularly, the family plan offers substantial savings compared to individual subscriptions.
Key Features Included in YouTube Premium Family Plan
YouTube Premium Family Plan includes several features that distinguish it from a free YouTube account. The most noticeable feature is ad-free viewing. Users with YouTube Premium see no advertisements before, during, or after videos. This applies to all YouTube content across all devices. On average, regular YouTube users encounter multiple ads throughout their viewing sessions, so removing these advertisements significantly changes the viewing experience.

Background play is another major feature. On mobile devices, this feature allows videos to continue playing even when the YouTube app is closed or when the user switches to another application. This is particularly useful when listening to music videos, podcasts, or audio-based content while using other phone functions. Free YouTube accounts require the app to remain open and the screen active, which drains battery and prevents multitasking.
Offline download capability lets family members save videos to their devices to watch later without an internet connection. Users can download videos through the YouTube app on their phone or tablet and watch them during flights, commutes, or in areas with limited connectivity. Downloaded videos remain accessible for up to 30 days before they must be refreshed, and YouTube Music songs downloaded through the family plan remain available for 30 days after the subscription ends.
YouTube Music Premium is included with the family plan for all members. This provides access to YouTube's music streaming service with no advertisements, background play on mobile devices, and the ability to create custom playlists and stations. Family members can explore millions of songs, official music videos, and live performances. YouTube Music Premium differs from YouTube's standard music features by offering curated playlists, personalized radio stations, and the ability to save songs and albums for offline listening.
Each family member maintains individual accounts with separate watch histories, subscriptions, and recommendations. This privacy feature ensures that children's content won't pollute an adult's recommendations, and one person's music preferences won't affect another's suggested content. YouTube collects viewing data separately for each account, so each family member receives personalized suggestions based only on their own activity.
Practical takeaway: Review which features matter most to your household. If your family frequently travels, offline downloading becomes valuable. If members use YouTube for background music while working or studying, background play justifies the subscription cost. If your household includes young children, separate watch histories prevent inappropriate content recommendations.
How to Set Up and Manage a Family Group
Setting up YouTube Premium Family Plan begins with creating or joining a family group through Google Family Link. One adult in the household serves as the family manager and initiates the setup process. The family manager must have an active Google account and access to the payment method used for the subscription. To start, the family manager visits Google's family group settings, typically accessible through their Google account settings or directly through the YouTube Premium page.

The setup process involves confirming the home address where all family members reside. Google requires that all family members live at the same address to prevent subscription sharing across different households. The family manager provides their address during setup, and this address is verified. All family members must confirm they live at this same address when joining the family group.
The family manager then invites other household members to join the family group. Invitations can be sent via email to Google accounts, and family members receive notifications about the invitation. When joining, members must confirm they live at the family's registered address. Up to six people can join a single family group, including the manager. Once all members have joined, the family manager can activate the YouTube Premium Family Plan subscription, and benefits become immediately available to all group members.
Managing the family group involves several ongoing responsibilities for the family manager. They control who is added to or removed from the group, handle payment methods and billing information, and manage any account issues related to the subscription. Family members can be removed from the group if they no longer live at the household address or if the family manager decides to end their access. When someone is removed, they lose YouTube Premium benefits, though their YouTube account and watch history remain intact.
The family manager also addresses disputes about content or behavior within the family group. If a family member repeatedly violates YouTube's Community Guidelines or terms of service, the family manager can remove them from the group. Additionally, if the subscription is canceled, all family members lose premium features, though they can
