Understanding Your Greensboro Water Bill
Your water bill from the City of Greensboro contains several key pieces of information that help you understand how much you're paying and what services are included. The bill typically shows your account number, service address, billing period, and the amount due. Most Greensboro residents receive bills monthly, though some accounts may be billed quarterly depending on the meter type and location within the service area.

The bill breaks down charges into different categories. The water charge reflects the cubic feet or gallons of water you used during the billing period. Greensboro measures usage by the hundred cubic feet (HCF), with one HCF equal to approximately 748 gallons. Separate charges appear for sewer services, stormwater management fees, and any applicable taxes. Understanding these separate line items helps you see exactly where your money goes each month.
The bill includes your current meter reading and previous meter reading, which allows you to calculate your personal usage. Comparing readings month to month shows whether your water consumption is increasing or staying steady. This information can be valuable if you want to track your usage patterns or identify potential leaks in your home's plumbing system.
Additional information on the bill may include meter replacement schedules, seasonal adjustment notices, or alerts about water quality. The bill also displays your account status, showing whether payment is current, past due, or if there are any disconnection notices. The due date is clearly marked, typically giving you 15 to 20 days from the billing date to submit payment.
Practical Takeaway: Before paying your bill, review each line item and compare your current usage reading to the previous month. This habit helps you spot billing errors early and tracks whether your water consumption is changing over time.

Paying in person gives you an immediate receipt and allows you to discuss any billing questions with a staff member.
Mail payment continues to be widely used. You can send a check or money order to the address listed on your bill. When mailing payments, allow 7 to 10 days for the mail to reach the city and for processing to occur. Always include your account number on the check and mail it to the designated payment address. Some people prefer this method because it creates a paper trail and allows them to pay on their own schedule.
Automatic bank draft or recurring payments set up through your personal bank account offer convenience for people who want their bills paid consistently each month. This reduces the risk of missed or late payments. You can arrange automatic payments through most banks by providing your water account information and authorizing regular monthly transfers.
Practical Takeaway: Choose the payment method that fits your routine best. If you're concerned about late payments, set up automatic payments or mark your calendar several days before the due date. Online payment typically has the fastest processing time if you're working close to a deadline.

Understanding Water Bill Charges and How They're Calculated
Your Greensboro water bill contains several distinct charges that together make up your total amount due. The primary charge is for water consumption, calculated based on your actual meter reading. The city measures water in hundred cubic feet (HCF). During the billing period, your meter is read, and the difference from the previous reading tells the city how much water flowed through your meter. This usage amount is multiplied by the rate per HCF, which may vary based on your usage level and whether you live in the city limits or in an extraterritorial service area.

Sewer charges appear separately on most bills and are calculated differently than water charges. In Greensboro, sewer fees are typically based on your water consumption, as the assumption is that most water used flows into the sewer system. However, if you have irrigation meters for outdoor water use that doesn't enter the sewer system, you may receive a reduced sewer charge. Sewer treatment is an expensive service involving infrastructure maintenance, treatment chemicals, and facility operations, which is why this line item often represents a significant portion of your bill.
Stormwater management fees fund the city's system for managing rainwater runoff. These fees may be based on the impervious surface area at your property, such as roof area, driveway, and concrete surfaces, rather than directly on water consumption. Stormwater management protects local waterways and reduces flooding, making this an important component of the city's environmental management.
Some bills include base or service charges that appear regardless of how much water you use. These fixed charges help cover meter reading, billing, and customer service operations. Understanding that part of your bill is a fixed charge helps you recognize that you cannot eliminate this portion even if you use zero water—it's a fee for access to the water system.
Taxes and additional fees may appear based on your location and local tax codes. The bill clearly identifies each charge so you can see what you're paying for. During summer months, usage charges often increase as outdoor watering and cooling needs rise. Winter bills typically show lower usage and lower charges, though base fees remain consistent.
Practical Takeaway: Review your bill line by line each month and note which charges change month to month and which stay the same. This helps you understand your bill better and catch any unusual increases that might indicate a water leak or billing error.
