Free Guide to U-Haul Pickup Truck Rental Pricing
Understanding U-Haul Pickup Truck Rental Basics
U-Haul offers several pickup truck models for rent, each designed for different moving and hauling needs. The most common option is the 5x8 utility trailer pulled behind your own vehicle, but U-Haul also rents actual pickup trucks in various sizes. The standard pickup truck rental from U-Haul is typically a Ford F-150 or similar full-size truck, which provides approximately 52 cubic feet of cargo space in the bed. For smaller jobs, U-Haul offers compact pickups that take up less space and may cost less per day.

The rental process begins with visiting uhaul.com or a local U-Haul location. You'll need to provide a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and a payment method. U-Haul requires renters to be at least 18 years old, though some locations may have higher age requirements. When you reserve a truck online, you select your pickup location, drop-off location, and rental dates. The system then provides pricing based on distance, truck type, and current demand.
Understanding the different truck categories helps you choose the right vehicle for your needs. A standard pickup truck works well for moving furniture, appliances, and general household items. If you're only transporting smaller loads or need better fuel efficiency, a compact truck might suffice. Conversely, if you're moving an entire house or need to haul heavy equipment, U-Haul's larger trucks or multiple rentals might be necessary. The bed length varies between models—some offer 5.5-foot beds while others have 8-foot beds, affecting how much you can load.
Practical takeaway: Before reserving, measure your items and compare them to the truck's cargo dimensions. This prevents booking the wrong size and incurring additional charges or making multiple trips.
How U-Haul Pricing Structure Works
U-Haul's pricing for pickup truck rentals follows a multi-component model that includes the base rental fee, mileage charges, and various additional fees. The base rental fee typically covers a 24-hour period and varies by truck type, location, and season. According to industry data, a one-day local rental of a standard pickup truck generally ranges from $19.95 to $39.95, though prices fluctuate based on demand and local market conditions.

Mileage charges are a significant portion of rental costs for longer distances. U-Haul charges per mile, and the rate varies depending on the truck size and your route. For long-distance moves, a truck might incur charges ranging from $0.99 to $1.99 per mile for a standard pickup. This means a 100-mile move could add $99 to $199 to your base rental cost. One-way rentals—where you pick up in one location and drop off in another—typically cost more than local rentals because the company must relocate the vehicle.
Seasonal pricing significantly affects costs. During peak moving season (May through September), especially around weekends and month-end dates, prices rise substantially. A $25 daily rental during off-season might cost $45 or more during peak times. Holiday weekends and the first and last days of each month see higher demand and corresponding price increases. Planning your move for a less popular time, such as mid-week in winter, can reduce expenses by 20-40%.
Environmental and damage-related fees add to the total cost. U-Haul charges for fuel if you return the truck with less fuel than when you rented it. The fuel charge is typically 150% of the posted gas station price, making it expensive to let U-Haul refuel for you. Equipment rental fees apply if you need dollies, furniture pads, or lifting equipment. A dolly rental might add $5 to $20 to your bill, depending on type and duration.
Practical takeaway: Use U-Haul's online reservation system to compare prices across different dates and times. Shifting your rental by just a few days or choosing a weekday instead of weekend can reveal significant savings—sometimes 30% or more.
Mileage and Distance Calculation Methods
Understanding how U-Haul calculates mileage helps you estimate total costs accurately. U-Haul's system measures the distance between your pickup and drop-off locations using their internal routing system, which may differ slightly from what you see on Google Maps or GPS. The company uses the most direct available route, not scenic or alternate routes. When you make a reservation online, the system displays the estimated mileage and corresponding charge before you confirm the booking.

For local moves, U-Haul offers what they call "local" rentals, typically within a 40-mile radius of the rental location. These rentals charge a daily rate plus mileage, making them suitable for moves where you're staying in the same general area. If you exceed the 40-mile radius, you may be charged the one-way rate instead, which can be more economical for longer distances. The one-way rental model includes mileage in a flat fee structure, charging based on the total distance without separate per-mile charges.
When U-Haul calculates your final mileage charge, they measure the actual distance you traveled using the truck's odometer. This means that if you drive an inefficient route or use the truck for personal errands beyond your stated destination, you'll pay for those miles. The rental agreement specifies the allowed drop-off location. Returning the truck to a different location than reserved may result in additional charges or relocation fees.
Understanding the difference between your estimated mileage and actual mileage is important. The estimate provided at booking is based on the most direct route. If you take a longer route or make detours, your actual mileage will be higher, increasing your final bill. Some customers discover this when they receive their final invoice weeks after returning the truck. Keep track of your starting and ending odometer readings to verify the charges match your actual usage.
Practical takeaway: Request the specific mileage estimate in writing at the time of rental, and plan your route beforehand. Note the odometer reading when you pick up and drop off the truck to verify the mileage U-Haul charges.
Additional Fees and Hidden Costs to Consider
Beyond the base rental and mileage, several additional fees can increase your total cost. Equipment rental fees are among the most common. If you need a dolly to move heavy items, expect to pay $5 to $15 per day. Furniture pads rent for approximately $0.99 to $2 per pad. Moving blankets, boxes, and other supplies add to expenses. Many people underestimate these costs, only to discover at checkout that protective equipment and supplies increased their bill by $50 or more.

Fuel charges represent another significant potential expense. When you rent a truck, it arrives with a full tank of fuel. U-Haul requires you to return it at the same fuel level. If the tank isn't full when you return it, U-Haul charges you to refill it—typically at 150% of the pump price. This pricing model makes it expensive to let U-Haul handle refueling. For example, if gas costs $3.50 per gallon and you're short 10 gallons, U-Haul charges $52.50 instead of the $35 you'd pay at a gas station. Returning the truck with a full tank yourself costs significantly less.
Damage fees can be substantial. U-Haul charges for any damage to the truck beyond normal wear and tear. A dent might cost $150 to $500 to repair, depending on severity. Interior stains, carpet damage, or scratches incur cleaning and repair charges. Although U-Haul offers damage waiver coverage for an additional daily fee (typically $15 to $30 per day), this optional protection covers most accidental damage. Whether purchasing this coverage makes sense depends on your move's complexity and your comfort level with potential damage liability.
Late return fees apply if you don't return the truck by the agreed-upon time. U-Haul charges an additional day's rental rate for every 24 hours (or partial day) the truck is late. For example, if your daily rate is $30 and you return the truck six hours late, you'll pay an additional $30 charge. This makes returning the truck on time crucial, especially when renting during peak times when per-day
