Free Guide to Changing Your PayPal Account Name
Understanding Your PayPal Account Name Options
Your PayPal account name is one of the primary ways people identify you on the platform. PayPal allows account holders to use different types of names depending on their account setup and preferences. Understanding what name options are available to you is the first step in making changes to your account.

PayPal accounts typically display two different name fields that serve different purposes. Your "Full Name" is the legal name associated with your account, which is what appears on financial documents and transactions. This name is usually tied to your identity verification process. Your "Display Name" or "Business Name" (if you have a business account) is what other PayPal users see when they interact with you on the platform. These two fields operate independently, meaning you can have different information in each one, depending on your account type.
For personal accounts, your full name appears on invoices and payment records. If you operate a small business or sell items online, you may have set up a business account, which allows you to display a business name instead of your personal name. Understanding which type of account you have will determine what name changes are available to you.
The reasons people want to change their account name vary widely. Some individuals get married or divorced and want their name to reflect their current legal status. Others may have misspelled their name during initial registration. Business owners sometimes want to rebrand or change their business name. Some users simply prefer privacy and want to use a different display name for transactions with other users.
Practical takeaway: Before making any changes, log into your PayPal account and locate your account settings to identify which names are currently displayed and determine whether you have a personal or business account type.
Steps to Access Your PayPal Account Settings
Accessing your account settings is straightforward and can be done from either a computer or mobile device. The process begins by logging into your PayPal account with your email address and password. Once you've successfully logged in, you'll see your account dashboard with various options and menu items.

On a computer, look for the gear icon or "Settings" option, typically located in the upper right corner of the page near your account information. Clicking this will open a dropdown menu with several choices. You'll see options such as "Account Settings," "Wallet," "Resolution Center," and other account management features. Select "Account Settings" to proceed to the full settings page.
On a mobile device using the PayPal app, the process is similar. Open the app and tap the menu icon (usually three horizontal lines) at the bottom right of the screen. Scroll through the menu options until you find "Settings" or "Account Settings." Tap this option to access your account information.
Once you're in the account settings area, you'll see several tabs or sections including "Personal Information," "Financial Information," "Notifications," and others. The name change process typically begins in the "Personal Information" section, though the exact layout may vary slightly depending on whether you're using a web browser or mobile app.
It's important to note that PayPal regularly updates its interface, so the exact location or appearance of buttons and menu items may differ from what is described in older guides or tutorials. If you cannot locate the settings option immediately, look for a help icon within the PayPal interface, which often has a question mark symbol.
Practical takeaway: Bookmark or save your PayPal settings page for future reference so you can return to account management features more quickly in the future.
Changing Your Display Name or Business Name
The display name is what other PayPal users see when you send them money, receive payments, or interact with them through the platform. Changing your display name is often simpler than changing your legal name because it doesn't require verification of legal documents. This is the name that appears to buyers if you're selling items or to anyone who receives a payment from you.

To change your display name, navigate to the "Personal Information" section within your account settings. Look for a field labeled "Display Name," "Public Name," or "Business Name" depending on your account type. Some account types allow you to create a custom display name that doesn't match your legal name, while others may have restrictions.
If you have a personal account and want to use a display name, you typically have the option to enter a nickname or preferred name. This can be your full name, first name only, a business name, or even a username-style identifier. PayPal generally allows flexibility here as long as the name doesn't violate their policies against offensive language or impersonation.
For business accounts, the process is similar but typically labeled differently. You'll find a "Business Name" field where you can enter the name you want to display publicly. If you're changing a business name due to rebranding, you can update this field directly. Some business accounts also have the option to add a "Display Name" that's separate from the business legal name, giving you flexibility in how you present yourself to customers.
After entering your new display name, look for a "Save" or "Update" button to apply the changes. The changes typically take effect within minutes, though in some cases it may take a few hours for the new name to appear across all parts of the PayPal platform. You should receive a confirmation message indicating that your change has been saved.
Practical takeaway: When choosing a new display name, consider what you want customers or payment recipients to see and ensure it accurately represents you or your business while complying with PayPal's terms of service.
Changing Your Legal Name on Your PayPal Account
Changing your legal name (the name associated with your identity and financial records) is more involved than changing your display name because PayPal requires verification. This is the name that appears on tax documents, bank transfer records, and official account information. PayPal has these requirements to comply with financial regulations and anti-fraud measures.

Common reasons people need to change their legal name on PayPal include marriage, divorce, legal name change, or correcting a name that was misspelled during initial account creation. The process varies slightly depending on why you're making the change and what information PayPal has on file for you.
To begin the legal name change process, go to your account settings and locate your "Legal Name" or "Full Name" field. Click on this field or look for an "Edit" button next to it. You may see a message explaining that changing your legal name requires verification. PayPal may ask you to confirm the change through your linked bank account or by other verification methods.
If you're changing your name due to marriage or divorce, PayPal may ask you to provide documentation such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order reflecting the legal name change. You can typically upload these documents directly through your account settings. Take clear photos or scans of the official documents and ensure all text is readable before uploading.
If you're correcting a name that was misspelled during registration, the process may be simpler. PayPal may only need you to confirm the correct spelling and verify it through your linked bank account information. The system will check if the name you're entering matches the name on file with your bank.
PayPal processes legal name changes and reviews any submitted documentation within a few business days. You'll receive an email notification once the change has been reviewed and approved. If PayPal needs additional information or clarification, they will contact you through the email address associated with your account.
Practical takeaway: When preparing to change your legal name, gather all necessary documentation in advance and ensure that the name you're entering matches your official legal identification documents as closely as possible.
Dealing with Account Limitations During Name Changes
In some cases, PayPal may place temporary limitations on your account during or after a name change. These limitations are security measures designed to protect your account and prevent fraudulent activity. Understanding what these limitations mean and how to work through them can reduce frustration during the process.

A temporary account limitation typically means that certain features may be restricted while PayPal reviews your account information. You might not be able to send money, receive payments, or withdraw funds for a period of time. This doesn't mean there's a problem with your account; it's simply a precautionary step PayPal takes when significant account information changes.
Common reasons PayPal places limitations during name changes include: ensuring the name change is legitimate and not due to account compromise, verifying that the new name matches official identification, preventing fraud by comparing the name change to account activity patterns, and updating their systems with new information.
