Find and View Your Saved Passwords on Windows

Understanding Where Windows Stores Your Passwords

Windows keeps track of passwords you enter while using your computer in several different locations. When you sign into websites using Microsoft Edge or other built-in features, Windows remembers this information to make logging in faster next time. The operating system stores these passwords in encrypted sections of your computer that are protected by your Windows login password.

Your passwords are not stored as plain text that anyone can read. Instead, Windows uses encryption technology to scramble them into code. This means even if someone accesses your computer's files directly, they cannot easily see your actual passwords. However, if someone knows your Windows password, they can view the stored passwords through the Settings menu or other built-in tools.

It is important to understand that different programs store passwords in different ways. Microsoft Edge, the web browser included with Windows, stores passwords one way. Windows itself stores passwords for network connections and other system functions in another way. Some third-party programs like Firefox or Chrome maintain their own separate password storage systems.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 both include password management features. Earlier versions like Windows 7 had different systems for storing this information. Knowing where your passwords are stored helps you manage them better and keeps your accounts more secure.

Practical takeaway: Recognize that your passwords exist in multiple locations on your Windows computer, and knowing where to find them is the first step toward better password management and security awareness.

Viewing Passwords Saved in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is the default web browser in Windows 10 and Windows 11. When you enter a password on a website and choose to save it, Edge remembers it for future visits to that site. You can view these saved passwords through the browser settings at any time.

To view your Microsoft Edge passwords, open Edge and click the three-line menu button in the top right corner. Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu. In the Settings window, look for "Passwords and autofill" on the left side menu. Click this option to see your password settings. You will see a section labeled "Saved passwords" with a list of websites where you have saved login information.

To see the actual password for any saved site, click on the website name in the list. A window will appear showing the username or email address associated with that account. Next to the password field, you will see an eye icon. Click this eye icon to reveal the password in plain text. Windows may ask you to confirm your Windows login password before showing the actual password. This is a security feature designed to prevent unauthorized viewing of your passwords.

You can also manage your passwords from this same menu. Options include deleting individual saved passwords, removing all passwords at once, or controlling which websites are allowed to save passwords in the future. Some people also turn off the password-saving feature entirely if they prefer not to have Edge remember their login information.

Practical takeaway: Microsoft Edge passwords are viewable through Settings by navigating to Passwords and autofill, where you can see both usernames and passwords after confirming your Windows identity.

Finding Passwords Through Windows Credential Manager

Windows Credential Manager is a built-in tool that stores passwords for many different purposes beyond just web browsing. It keeps track of passwords used for network drives, email accounts, remote desktop connections, and other Windows features. This is a central location where Windows maintains login information for various services and connections.

To access Credential Manager, open the Control Panel on your Windows computer. You can do this by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting "Control Panel," or by typing "Control Panel" into the Windows search box. Once in Control Panel, look for "User Accounts" or "Credential Manager" depending on your Windows version. In Windows 10 and 11, you can also type "Credential Manager" directly into the Windows search box and open it that way.

Inside Credential Manager, you will see two main sections: "Web Credentials" and "Windows Credentials." Web Credentials contains passwords for websites and online services. Windows Credentials contains passwords for network connections, remote desktop access, and other system-level services. Click on any credential in either section to expand it and view the details.

When you click on a specific credential, you will see fields for the username or email address and the password. However, the password appears as dots or asterisks for security reasons. To reveal the actual password, click on the "Show" button next to the password field. Your computer will ask you to enter your Windows password to confirm your identity. Once confirmed, the actual password will display in plain text.

Be aware that not all passwords you have ever entered will appear in Credential Manager. Passwords are only stored here if you specifically chose to save them and if the website or service was configured to work with Windows Credential Manager. Some websites and applications use their own internal password storage instead.

Practical takeaway: Credential Manager serves as a central repository for system and network passwords, accessible through Control Panel or Windows search, with the ability to reveal passwords after confirming your Windows login.

Viewing WiFi Passwords on Your Windows Device

Windows stores the passwords for WiFi networks you have connected to in the past. This information is saved so your computer can automatically reconnect to familiar networks without asking you to enter the password each time. You can view these saved WiFi passwords through Windows settings or command-line tools.

The easiest method to view WiFi passwords is through Settings. Open Settings by pressing the Windows key and typing "Settings," then open it. Navigate to "Network and Internet" and select "WiFi" from the left menu. Scroll down and click on "Manage known networks." A list of all WiFi networks your computer has previously connected to will appear. Click on any network name to see its details.

In the network details window, look for a button or link that says "Forget" or "Properties." Click on Properties. A new window will open showing information about that network. Look for a field showing the password or security key. The password appears hidden by default, showing only dots or asterisks. Click a checkbox or button that says "Show password" to reveal the actual WiFi password. Windows will request that you confirm your Windows login password before displaying the WiFi password.

Another method involves using the Command Prompt tool, which is more technical but often works when the Settings method does not. Open Command Prompt by searching for "cmd" in the Windows search box and selecting "Command Prompt" or "Windows PowerShell." Type the command: netsh wlan show profile name=[network name] key=clear, replacing "[network name]" with the actual name of the WiFi network. The password will appear next to "Key Content" in the results.

Understanding how to retrieve saved WiFi passwords is useful when you need to connect new devices to your home or office network, or when you have forgotten the password yourself. However, only use this information to connect your own devices or to help others who own the network.

Practical takeaway: WiFi passwords stored on your Windows device are retrievable through Settings under Network and Internet, or through Command Prompt commands, allowing you to reconnect devices or recover forgotten network passwords.

Security Considerations When Viewing Stored Passwords

While Windows provides ways to view your stored passwords, doing so safely requires careful consideration. When you reveal a password on your screen, anyone looking over your shoulder can see it. Be mindful of your surroundings when accessing this information, especially in shared spaces like offices, libraries, or coffee shops.

Your Windows login password is the key to accessing all your stored passwords. This makes your Windows login password incredibly important for your overall security. Use a strong Windows password—one that is at least 12 characters long and includes uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Change your Windows password regularly and never share it with anyone. If you believe someone has learned your Windows password, change it immediately.

Consider whether you actually need to store passwords in Windows at all. Many security experts recommend using a dedicated password manager application instead of relying on Windows' built-in storage. Password managers like Bitwarden, 1Password, or LastPass provide additional security features and work across multiple devices and browsers. If you do use Windows' password storage, limit it to less critical accounts and never store passwords for important financial or email accounts there.

Be cautious about allowing Windows to remember passwords when using public or shared computers. If you sign into your account on someone else's computer, disable password saving for that session. After using a public computer
